Spread the News: Kansas City’s First Support the Girls Campaign is April 1-30, 2017!
A few weeks back, I read an article in Marie Claire magazine about a Maryland-based nonprofit, Support the Girls. To make a long story short, the group’s founder initially was just looking for a place to donate extra bras — and her quest to find a home for these “unmentionables” led her to create Support the Girls whose mission is to collect and distribute donations of new and used bras and — because who couldn’t use these, too? — new, sealed packages of tampons and maxi pads to homeless and needy women and girls.
A woman shouldn’t choose between a hot meal and a bra or maxi pad. With your help, she doesn’t have to.
A bolt from above hit me and I thought, “I can help them!” Another long story short, I contacted the organization and am leading the first Kansas City-metro donation drive for Support the Girls. It’s April 1 through April 30, and I have three fantastic businesses who are willing to be collection points for the bras and feminine hygiene products:
- Bambou Salons & Spas in downtown Overland Park, KS, at 7301 W 80th Street
- My Bliss Nail Salon in the Liberty area (KC address, technically) at 9753 N. Cedar Avenue
- Time 2 Change Fitness for Women on the west side of Lee’s Summit, MO, at 407 S.W. Ward Road
The items collected during this Support the Girls campaign will go to good use. I’ve spoken to four local nonprofits who are very interested in receiving what we collect: City Union Mission in KC; Hope House in Independence and Lee’s Summit; Rose Brooks Center in KC; and the transitional housing facility River of Refuge in Raytown.
Will you help me Support the Girls and donate new or gently used bras and/or feminine hygiene products?
If you have questions about this campaign, email me or call/text me at 816-210-5857. In addition to the drop-off locations mentioned above, I’ll also accept donations at my home — just contact me for my address.
